History of Tumblr
- Development started in 2006 with David Karp and developer Marco Arment and launched in 2007
- Within two weeks the service gained 75,000 users
- By January 2016, it had 555 million monthly visitors
- As of June, 1, 2018, Tumblr hosts over 417.1 million blogs
What is it?
- Tumblr is a microblogging website and app
- It's a way to just express yourself in photos, videos, audio, and text
- You can message other bloggers and ask questions which appear as a new post so people and like and reblog it
- You can have more than one blog linked to a single account meaning you can have one about flowers, and one about DIYs for instance
Interesting facts
- In early June, 2012, Tumblr featured it's first major brand advertising campaign with Adidas, who launched a soccer Tumblr blog
- In May 20th, 2013, it was announced that Yahoo and Tumblr had reached an agreement that Yahoo! Inc. would acquire Tumblr for $1.1 billion in cash
- Many Tumblr users where enraged and caused a petition which got nearly 170,000 signatures
- Arment left the company in September 2010 to focus on Instapaper
- Karp announced that in November 2017 that he would leave the company at the end of the year due to Verison acquiring Yahoo! Inc. in June 2017 putting Yahoo and Tumblr under it's oath subsidiary
